Huntersville’s three nearest neighbors that are incorporated towns or cities are Cornelius, about 5 miles north, Davidson, about 6 miles north, and Mount Holly, about 10 miles southwest across the Catawba River. (Lake Norman of Iredell, about 10 miles away, is a Census-designated place, not a town.) Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson are all in Mecklenburg County and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, so they share a county tax rate, a school system and a property record office. Mount Holly is in Gaston County, with its own county tax, school district and records.
What this means for you
- Compare the combined rate, county plus town. The town rate is the only one that differs among Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson.
- School zones go by address, not town. A quarter of Huntersville’s parcels are zoned for the same high school as most of Cornelius, William Amos Hough.
- Every figure below comes from one year or one month for all four towns.
Property taxes
North Carolina rates are in cents per $100 of assessed value. These are the state’s 2025-2026 rates, the latest year the N.C. Department of Revenue has published for all four. The “effective” rate is the state’s adjustment for counties that last revalued property in different years. Mecklenburg and Gaston counties both last revalued in 2023, the table shows.
| Town, county | County rate | Town rate | Combined | Effective combined |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huntersville, Mecklenburg | 49.27 | 22.75 | 72.02 | 63.94 |
| Cornelius, Mecklenburg | 49.27 | 17.31 | 66.58 | 59.11 |
| Davidson, Mecklenburg | 49.27 | 26.6 | 75.87 | 67.36 |
| Mount Holly, Gaston | 59.9 | 40.5 | 100.4 | 89.02 |
The state’s table leaves out special district rates and fees. Huntersville’s county and town rates did not change for 2026-27, Mecklenburg County’s rate chart shows, and a Huntersville bill also carries the town’s residential solid waste fee; see our property tax guide. A small piece of Huntersville is in Cabarrus County and pays Cabarrus’s rate instead.
Homestead breaks are set by the state and work the same way in all four towns; none of the four has its own. Owners apply to the county assessor for the elderly or disabled exclusion, the circuit breaker deferment or the disabled veteran exclusion on the state’s AV-9 application for property tax relief, due by June 1.

Schools
Public high schools are the traditional district high schools with an address in each town in the federal NCES directory. Scores are the share of state tests at grade level or above in 2025-26, the state’s growth rating and the four-year graduation rate, from the state’s accountability data.
| Town | District (all schools, at grade level) | High school in town | At grade level | Growth | Four-year graduation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huntersville | Charlotte-Mecklenburg (60.9%) | Hopewell High | 60.8% | Exceeded | 89.6% |
| Huntersville | Charlotte-Mecklenburg (60.9%) | North Mecklenburg High | 54.6% | Exceeded | 90.1% |
| Cornelius | Charlotte-Mecklenburg (60.9%) | William Amos Hough High | 82.9% | Exceeded | Above 95% |
| Mount Holly | Gaston County Schools (53.5%) | East Gaston High | 55.6% | Met | 94.3% |
Davidson has no traditional high school with a Davidson address in the federal directory; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools assigns Davidson students to a high school by address. The statewide figure was 59.2% at grade level. Inside Huntersville, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ 2026-27 feeder data zones about half the town’s parcels for Hopewell, a quarter for North Mecklenburg and a quarter for Hough; our neighborhoods guide shows which areas go where.
