Huntersville does not mail its own tax bill. Mecklenburg County is the town’s tax collector: it assesses every property as of Jan. 1 and sends one bill that carries the county tax, the town tax and the fees. The Board of County Commissioners and the Huntersville Board of Commissioners each set their own rate. Bills go out each September.

The 2026 rates
Rates are in dollars per $100 of assessed value, from the county’s rate chart:
| Who levies it | 2026-27 rate | 2025-26 rate |
|---|---|---|
| Mecklenburg County | 0.4927 | 0.4927 |
| Town of Huntersville | 0.2275 | 0.2275 |
| Combined, inside Huntersville | 0.7202 | 0.7202 |
Neither rate moved this year. The town rate has been 22.75 cents since fiscal 2025, when it rose from 17.60 cents.
Homes in Huntersville’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, outside town limits but under town zoning, pay no town tax. They pay the county rate plus the Huntersville police district (11.70 cents) and fire district (9.25 cents) rates, 70.22 cents in all.

What a bill looks like
Divide the assessed value by 100 and multiply by the rate, then add the fees. For a single-family home assessed at $400,000 (our example, using the county’s rates):
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Mecklenburg County tax (0.4927) | $1,970.80 |
| Town of Huntersville tax (0.2275) | $910.00 |
| Town residential solid waste fee | $270.00 |
| County solid waste fee | $61.50 |
| Total | $3,212.30 |
The town’s solid waste fee pays for curbside garbage, recycling and yard waste. Each vehicle registered in town also carries a $20 town vehicle fee for the town’s transportation reserve fund, billed with the vehicle tax through the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles. Check your own assessed value on the county’s property record search.
Due dates and interest
According to the county’s rate chart and tax brochure:

- Unpaid bills can be advertised as delinquent and are subject to garnishment, levy and foreclosure.
How to pay
- Online: MeckNC.gov/paytax. An eCheck is free; Visa or Mastercard debit carries a $3.95 fee and other cards 2.35% (minimum $1.95).
- Phone: 1-800-994-1026, same fees.

The county advises against paying through your bank’s bill pay. A payment without the full 24-digit bill number is rejected.
Revaluation in 2027
Mecklenburg revalues all property every four years. The last revaluation was in 2023, and the next takes effect in 2027. The county says new value notices will be mailed in early 2027. You can ask for an informal review within 30 days of the date on the notice. After a revaluation, both boards decide whether to lower their rates.
How to appeal your value
Appeals go to the Board of Equalization and Review, according to the county’s appeals page:
- Complete the Formal Appeal Form and file it by the board’s deadline (May 4 in 2026), or by the “Last Date to Appeal” on a notice of value change if that is later.
- File by email, by mail to Mecklenburg County BER Real Property Appeals, P.O. Box 31127, Charlotte, NC 28231, or in person at 3205 Freedom Drive, Suite 3500.
- Supporting documents are due within 45 days of filing. You must show the tax value is well above market value.
- You then have 30 days after the board’s decision to appeal to the N.C. Property Tax Commission.
Tax relief programs
The county’s tax relief page lists the state programs for homeowners:
- Elderly or disabled exclusion: owners 65 or older, or totally and permanently disabled, with income of $38,800 or less exclude $25,000 or 50% of the home’s value, whichever is greater. Apply with Form AV-9 by June 1.
- Circuit breaker deferral: lets qualifying elderly or disabled owners defer part of the tax on their home.
- Disabled veteran exclusion: the first $45,000 of assessed value of a qualifying veteran’s home is excluded.
What this means for you
- Rates held this year, so an unchanged value means an unchanged tax line.
- Pay by Jan. 5, 2027, to avoid interest.
- Watch for a new value notice in early 2027 and appeal quickly if it looks wrong.
